Seminar Series with Petros Patounas

Scholia to Lacan’s Seminar on Joyce, ‘Le Sinthome’

Petros Patounas, psychoanalyst of the SFL, initiates a series of bi-monthly seminars responding to Lacan’s Seminar XXIII on Joyce and the Sinthome based on his reading of the text.

The purpose of this series, according to Patounas, is not to try to comprehend what Lacan is supposed to have “said” leading to a paranoiac practice of psychoanalysis, but to find more thresholds to the Real, an approach to the Real that allows each singular analyst to practice with it in an original way.

The talks begin on 16th of February with the last seminar taking place on 15th of June. The seminars will be brief, around 30 minutes with a further 15 minutes for Q&A at the end.

The School of the Freudian Letter UK presents

Eugenia Varela Navarro with

The subject's answer to the question of sex is his symptom

Summary

The case analyzed by Sigmund Freud that we are going to study in detail, "Psychoanalytical remarks on a case of paranoia (dementia paranoides) described in autobiographical form", offers us a teaching of great value about delirium, elementary phenomena, phenomena of the body and the event of the body which will be the sinthome that President Schreber succeeds in inventing in order to find stabilization for his delirium. The sinthomatic invention is produced from a push to the woman who finds her stabilization and her reconciliation with the mode of enjoying “to be the woman of God”, a transformation that will be made asymptotically.

About the speaker

Eugenia Varela Navarro is a psychoanalyst practicing in Paris. She holds a doctorate in Psychoanalysis with University of Paris and a DESS diploma in clinical and pathological psychology. She is a member of School of the Freudian Cause and the World Association of Psychoanalysis.

The Inside and Outside of Lacan's Topology & Freud's Little Pouch

The School of the Freudian Letter UK presents

María Líza Ahearne with

The Inside and Outside of Lacan's Topology & Freud's Little Pouch

On 11th of December please join M.L. Ahearne in experiencing the similarities between Freud's little pouch in The Ego and The Id and Lacan's topology in Seminar IX.

Summary

While today, the discourse of identity has taken precedence in politics, film, and mass media, Maria Liza Ahearne will look at the structural identity of the subject particularly through the lens of Lacan’s topological adventures in his Seminar IX and Freud’s magnificently haunting rendition of his pouch in The Ego and The Id.

Reading these two texts together exposes the phenomena of identifications that marks the body. Like Lacan’s topology in Seminar IX, Freud’s text on the ego, id, unconscious and consciousness marks the subject’s pre-formulations, unbeknownst, that stems from preceding generations.

Most importantly, this seminar will engage with the audience as Maria Liza enjoys nothing more than extending the Lacanian viz. Freudian transmission of psychoanalysis.

Suggested Reading:

  1. Freud. (1923) 2001. “The Ego and The Id.” In The Standard Edition of the CompletePsychological Works of Sigmund: The Ego and the Id and Other Works. Volume XIX (1923-1925), translated by James Strachey, 1–66. London: Vintage Books.
  2. Lacan's Seminar IX, unofficially translation by Cormac Gallagher. In Lacan in Ireland.

About the speaker

Maria Liza Ahearne is a faculty member and candidate psychoanalyst in the Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis in San Francisco. She is a doctoral candidate in Anthropology at the California Institute of Integral Studies, where her research topic investigates the transmission and discrepancies between Lacanian psychoanalysis in Buenos Aires, Argentina and in the United States, and maintains a private practice in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy in San Francisco, California.

On the Gordian knot and the Möbius topology of the Act

From
30-10-2021 18:00
To
30-10-2021 19:30

Event details

On 30th of October Petros Patounas, psychoanalyst of the School of the Freudian Letter, will present a seminar entitled 'On the Gordian knot and the Möbius topology of the Act'

The Gordian Knot was part of the history and legend surrounding Alexander the Great and his encounter with another enigma- an enigma according to Patounas equally important as that of the Sphinx and Oedipus’ myth: whoever unties the knot, will be the king of Asia.

Alexander, says Patounas has given us access unwillingly to the approach of the cut, not the vital psychoanalytic one introduced by Lacan’s genius, but the cut the Act brings forth and provides the threshold from the Subject of the unconscious, where the subject is represented in the signifiers, to the Verb of the Act where the hypokeimenon (now Verb) dies and resurrects itself having admittance to desire, which is beyond the body and thus beyond the signifier.

Patounas will introduce the modified Möbius Topology where the presence of the Act on it permits 'straight' lines.
